OUGD401 - Research - Pablo Abad

In my opinion, it is clear to see that Graphic Designer Pablo Abad is highly influenced by work of the Memphis Group in the 1980s, and this is why he excites me, and I have decided to discuss him in my COP essay. Pablo Abad is a graphic designer and art director living in Madrid (Spain). He was born in 1976 in a small town in the north of Spain called “Guardo”. When he was 25 years old he became interested in graphic design and started to study design in Madrid. Today a lot of his works are developed based on typography, which he taught himself. He even created the typeface “Aurora Borealis”, a modular geometric typeface inspired by the polar auroras.

For his Ucon Artist Feature he got deep into greek history and developed a series of wonderful mystic creatures. They all have a similar ethnological feeling, which can be interpreted as “historical alternative” towards our western model of society. Pablo uses symbolic environments of old Native American tradition as well as esoteric Indian divinities. Additionally he works with complex fillings that reminds of surfaces from Jupiter, endless fractals or even 80ies pattern graphic.
Pablo’s work has been featured in magazines such as Computer Arts, New Papers, Étapes, Frozzen Magazine and exhibitions such as Cartográfica in Madrid and Shanghai.
